Tragic Crash Near Opp, Alabama Claims Two Young Lives

The community of Opp, Alabama is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two children who were killed in a head-on collision last Friday night in Covington County. One of the victims was a student at Opp City Schools, according to local officials.

The fatal crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on the Opp Bypass near Cool Springs Road, when a 2020 Honda Civic collided head-on with a 2024 Honda HR-V.

Details of the Collision

According to the Opp Police Department and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), a 60-year-old woman from Elba was driving the Civic with two children in the backseat. Both children, who were under 10 years old, were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Geneva Superintendent, Jami Seay, identified one of the victims as Finn Free, a six-year-old first grader whose mother, Kayla Free, teaches third graders. Nine-year-old Jones Ann Cain was also killed in the head-on collision.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The driver of the HR-V, a 25-year-old man from Montgomery, and two female passengers, ages 23 and 25, were also seriously injured and airlifted to nearby trauma centers for treatment.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the vehicles to collide. ALEA’s Traffic Homicide Unit is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Community Response

The Opp City School District released a statement expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to the victim’s family, calling it a “heartbreaking tragedy” that has shaken the small community.

Superintendent Seay said: “There are no words to express the depth of this tragedy,” and asked for prayers for the victims’ families.

Counseling services have been made available to students and staff affected by the loss.

Local residents have also gathered online and at community vigils to honor the victims’ memory and support their grieving families.

Funeral Services

Geneva public schools will dismiss early on Wednesday so students and faculty can attend funeral services of Finn Free. Services will be held at Ino Baptist Church, and a viewing will begin at noon.

Opp schools will have a virtual learning day on Tuesday so students and faculty can attend funeral services for Jones Ann Cain.

Investigators Examine Potential Contributing Factors

Authorities have not yet released an official cause of the collision, but investigators will likely examine:

  • Whether speed, distraction, or impairment played a role
  • Possible lane departure or **failure to yield
  • Roadway conditions at the time of the crash
  • Whether any **mechanical issues may have contributed

Law enforcement is urging drivers to use extra caution when traveling along the Opp Bypass, a stretch of roadway that has seen several serious crashes in recent years.

When a fatal crash occurs, families may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims under Alabama law. These cases can seek compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Medical bills
  • Loss of companionship and emotional suffering
  • Punitive damages (in cases involving reckless or negligent conduct)

Because Alabama follows strict contributory negligence laws, even small details about how the crash occurred can significantly affect a family’s legal options.

Consulting an experienced Alabama wrongful death lawyer early in the process can help protect your rights.
