Local Man’s Truck Falls Off of Highway Shortly After Police Chase

(Wilcox County, AL, Feb. 23, 2021) — A Camden resident died on Tuesday afternoon after driving his logging truck through a guard rail and into a creek. The deceased man, identified as 25-year-old Charles Portis, had fled from local law enforcement officers earlier in the day. Sheriff Earnest Evans of Wilcox County said Portis’s girlfriend had filed harassment charges against him, so there was an outstanding warrant for Portis’s arrest. This led to Sheriff’s Department officers pursuing Portis on Tuesday. However, the sheriff said officers quickly abandoned the chase.  Shortly after, Portis’s truck fell 30 feet off of Highway 41 into Pine Barrell Creek. Authorities have not determined whether the crash was intentional or not. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the crash. In addition to determining the exact cause of the crash, officers are also awaiting details on Portis’s official cause of death. The ALEA said Portis died from the impact caused by the crash or by drowning after his truck entered the creek.   Source: Alabamanews.net Reach out to Fob James Law Firm If You Need Legal Advice Unfortunately, auto accidents like this happen around the state of Alabama.
