(October 6, 2025 – Gadsden, Alabama) – A Jacksonville State University (JSU) student tragically died in a two-vehicle trucking crash near Gadsden, Alabama. The victim has been identified as Elizabeth Brooklyn Barnes, a 21-year-old nursing student.

What Happened

According to local authorities, the collision occurred at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, on U.S. 411 near the 223 mile marker, about four miles north of Gadsden.

Barnes was killed when her 2017 Lexus NX collided with a 1998 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

Emergency responders pronounced Barnes dead at the scene. The other driver’s identity and condition have not yet been released.

The Jacksonville State University community mourned the loss of Barnes, describing her as a promising nursing student with a bright future.

According to a statement by Jax State President Don Killingsworth, the university is offering counseling for those who knew Barnes

Ongoing Investigation

The crash remains under investigation by Alabama law enforcement officials. Authorities are expected to review several key factors:

  1. Driver behavior: Speeding, distraction, impairment, or failure to yield.
  2. Roadway design and conditions: Lighting, signage, and visibility.
  3. Vehicle mechanics: Possible brake or tire failures.

The family of Barnes, who began her studies this semester, has set services at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Gadsden First United Methodist Church. A visitation will take place at 2 p.m.
