(Birmingham, AL, March 21, 2021) — A passing-by driver died after multiple vehicles were racing on Arkadelphia Road on Sunday morning.

The Birmingham Police Department responded to reports of street racing and a four-vehicle collision around 6:00 AM. They found one unresponsive individual when they arrived at the crash site.

Police identified the dead driver as 52-year-old Brandy Ballard of Birmingham and declared her dead at the scene.

Police determined that Ballard was driving down the 800-block of Arkadelphia road when one of the racing cars crossed over the centerline.

The two vehicles collided in the southbound lanes. Police have not detailed how the other two cars were involved in the crash.

However, police also determined that the vehicle that caused the crash had left the scene. Witnesses helped police identify the absent vehicle as a Camaro. Police later identified and found the car, owned by Carmesia Flannigan, 22.

Flannigan was arrested and charged with Ballard’s murder. Additionally, police charged Flannigan with possession of a controlled substance and leaving the scene of a crash. Authorities booked Flannigan into the Jefferson County Jail.

The BPD’s investigation into this crash remains open, and individuals who have information are asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama.
